Dr. Surbhi Singh

President

She needed a hero and that’s what she became!

Dr. Surbhi Singh is a practicing gynaecologist by profession since the last 16 years. However, her identity goes well beyond her profession and she is first and foremost a compassionate citizen who has selflessly rendered her services wherever they are needed. It was in fact her compassion that drove her to volunteer to serve victims in the flood struck Kashmir in 2014, in the Kollam Temple fire in Kerala in 2016 and in the earthquake struck Nepal in 2015. During her clinical practice, she met with girls and women from disadvantaged and vulnerable sections of the society and saw how they are devoid of the most basic knowledge about themselves and their own bodies and about the natural process of menstruation. She understood how this lack of knowledge also made it easier for them to believe baseless myths that crippled their growth. It was then that she realized that she will only be able to help a handful from her cubicle and hence decided to step out and make the right knowledge available to the masses. Her determination and conviction only got stronger as she interacted with girls in schools. They confided in her, let her in on the struggles that they go through and as she equipped them with the right knowledge about their bodies and the courage to speak up against abuse, she saw a new spark of hope in their eyes.

With her vision to make the world a better place for girls and women to live in she is now spearheading the movement to break taboos and silence around menstruation and sexual and reproductive health. Under her leadership her not for profit organization Sachhi Saheli has successfully educated and empowered several adolescents, young adults, parents and teachers. Her passion and zeal motivate the entire team to take this movement to greater heights.

Her tremendous efforts, strong will-power, dedication and hard work have made her an icon in the field of “Menstrual Health Awareness”. Her work has been highly appreciated and recognized and she has received the following AWARDS-

  • Excellence in Social Work awarded by Indian Council for UN relations (ICUNR)
  • Vishisht Chikitsa Ratna award by Indian Medical Association (IMA)
  • Best Community Worker awarded by Delhi Medical Association (DMA)
