In India the stigma around menstruation is so deeply entrenched that even most of the menstruators from educated and well-off families hardly talk about it and silently cope with the health issues and problems poor menstrual management brings for them. They may have the facilities to maintain hygiene but they do get the confidence of right knowledge about periods. continue to think themselves as impure while on their periods. When we see this kind of scenario, we can hardly imagine what kind of problems those menstruating women face who neither get knowledge about menstruation, talk secretly about it and nor access to basic facilities required to maintain menstrual health. Women from poor families, or women migrating from rural areas to urban areas in search of work often face such difficult situations.
Sachhi Saheli believes that disseminating right knowledge around menstruation is important so that menstruators become able to openly discuss the issues they face, start prioritizing menstrual health and ask for their rights to have access to sanitary products.
On 15th January 2021, Sachhi Saheli in collaboration with South- East DSLSA conducted a session on menstrual hygiene and health awareness for the women staying at two-night shelters of Delhi. The session was organized under South DSLSA’s Project- ‘Pahooch’ at Shelter homes in Amar colony and Nizamuddin by Ms. Namita Bhura and Ms. Rikita Narula respectively.
Sachhi Saheli in collaboration with District State legal Services Authority (DSLSA) organized a ‘Women Hygiene and Sanitary Napkin Sanitation Drive on 15th and 19th September at 5-night shelters situated in Delhi.
On 15th September Dr. Surbhi, Ms. Namita Bhura, Ms. Shahnaz Bano, Ms. Rikita Narula and Ms. Shalu Gupta started the drive at Night shelters of Bangla Sahib, Jama Masjid, Kalkaji and Chattarpur respectively.
On 19th September a similar drive was held at Jhandewalan night shelter.
The drive’s main aim was to make women staying in night shelters aware about the importance of menstrual hygiene and health and how sanitary pads play a crucial role in this. Simultaneously, the DSLSA team also provided free legal advice to the women.
